Hello and welcome to MIND What Matters, the podcast where we explore current topics and data in cybersecurity, with a little bit of fun so you can mind what matters.
My name is Samuel Hill, Lead Product Marketing here at MIND, and I am excited for today.
Normally I am joined by my fearless co-host, the actual brains of the operation here at MIND, but unfortunately Landen Brown is under the weather. I would say we got a replacement, but this is more of an upgrade. Today, we are upgrading the co-host.
I am joined by my good friend Tyson Hempel, the Chief Revenue Officer here at MIND. Tyson, you are many things, but the best way I would describe you is you are a damn good partner.
So Tyson, welcome to the MIND What Matters podcast.
Tyson Hempel
Hey, thanks guys. Thanks for having me, Sam. Always a pleasure to hang out with my boy.
And obviously, a shout out to Landen. Hopefully he is feeling better.
Super excited about the year in front of us, Sam, 2026. Thanks for the invite to the podcast. I feel like an important guy today.
Samuel Hill
Yeah, and you are important, Tyson. No matter what anybody else says, you are important to me at least.
Hey, it is 2026. I cannot believe that. It is a new year, new things going on in the world.
So Tyson, let us start off. What is on your mind?
Tyson Hempel
Well, how to grow a mustache like yours right now, Sam.
No, seriously, what is on my mind in 2026? As my career path and life path unfold, I am obviously super thankful for what is going on in my life, both personally and professionally.
I am having a lot of fun with my son Porter, who you know. He is 10 going on 11. We are trying to get some skiing in, so everybody out there, please do a little snow dance for us. We do have more snow in Big Sky than a lot of folks.
Just enjoying winter and really excited about the next year and how it unfolds, both personally and professionally. 2025 had its challenges, as life does, but we are on a run here at MIND. It is not just about the product, the market or the tech, it is about the people and the team.
Really excited to get rolling.
Samuel Hill
That is right. I cannot agree more.
We are all praying for snow here in Montana for whenever winter decides to arrive. It has been a very odd winter so far, but hopefully soon.
Tyson Hempel
Yeah, and if we are recording this today, I might be able to play golf at 3:30 on January 15 at 60 degrees. That is what we are dealing with here.
Either let it snow or let it be 60. One of the two.
Samuel Hill
It is ridiculous.
Either way, get outside and have some fun.
What is on my mind this week is that it is a new year. People are setting intentions, goals and resolutions. I am looking forward to continuing what we have been building at MIND, especially the podcast, getting more eyeballs and continuing the trajectory. It has been a lot of fun so far.
Let us move into our next segment, Mind the Headlines.
Mind the Headlines
Samuel Hill
Tyson, you and I both got our start working together in a healthcare-focused company.
Now we are seeing ChatGPT and other GenAI tools start talking about integrating health records and data collection. The idea is that you could input medical information directly into ChatGPT.
What do you think about that?
Tyson Hempel
With all the AI going on across browsers and platforms, it creates a significant data security challenge.
Healthcare especially, because of the amount of sensitive data. HIPAA data, patient records, it is some of the most sought-after data on the black market.
This is a threat landscape that should be taken very seriously.
As more health records and data proliferate, and as access expands, every security leader, and honestly every CEO, should be thinking about how to protect that data.
Samuel Hill
It is interesting. They say hundreds of millions of people are asking health questions every week.
Healthcare is personal. It requires trusted expertise.
There are clear benefits, like analyzing trends from wearable data. But when you start integrating full health records, it raises real concerns.
The key issue is the connectivity layer, how data moves between trusted and untrusted systems.
Tyson Hempel
Exactly.
You can change your credit card number, but you cannot change your blood type.
This data sits at the core of identity. That is why it is so valuable to bad actors.
Samuel Hill
Let me ask you this. Would you trust “Dr. ChatGPT”?
Tyson Hempel
I think it can be useful, but you need to be careful.
A real example, my son had a high fever for several days. It was 1 a.m., my wife was out of town, and I did ask ChatGPT for guidance.
That said, it should never replace professional medical advice. It is a tool, not the authority.
Evaluating Cybersecurity Companies
Samuel Hill
You are very plugged into the cybersecurity ecosystem.
How do you evaluate companies, their valuations and their market approach?
Tyson Hempel
There is no single answer.
First, you need to understand the market you are entering. Timing matters.
With MIND, data security and DLP are top priorities for CISOs right now. That alignment matters.
Second, you have to listen to the market. Early-stage companies fail when they ignore feedback from customers and design partners.
Third, it is about people. Always.
Great teams, strong culture and alignment matter more than anything.
And finally, you have to work hard. There is no shortcut.
Samuel Hill
That is what I see too.
There are so many cybersecurity companies because there are so many problems to solve.
But now, AI is inflating valuations. You add “AI” to your pitch and suddenly the valuation jumps.
So what should buyers look for?
Tyson Hempel
Do not get distracted by buzzwords.
Just because a company says “AI” does not mean anything.
Focus on partnership. Find vendors that are committed to long-term value, not just selling software.
Ask:
What problem do they solve today?
What happens in six months?
In a year?
It is about people, process and technology together.
Samuel Hill
That is key.
At the end of the day, CISOs need to know the company will still be there in five years.
You Can’t Make This Up
Samuel Hill
Let us switch gears.
I had a Vegas event where a presenter went over time, ignored signals to wrap up, and literally said, “I will be done when I am done.”
I had to follow that.
You cannot make this stuff up.
What about you?
Tyson Hempel
I have plenty, but I will keep it PG.
At a partner event, we had a race between some younger guys and, let us say, more experienced folks.
One guy tried to sprint and pulled his hamstring immediately. Completely done.
And for those who have never pulled a hamstring, it is not subtle. It is game over.
Samuel Hill
That is the sniper shot moment.
Lesson learned, do not race people 20 years younger than you.
Closing
Samuel Hill
As we close, Tyson, what did you learn today?
Tyson Hempel
Besides how great your mustache looks?
Honestly, this was a lot of fun. I appreciate being here and I am looking forward to doing it again.
Samuel Hill
What I learned is this.
Look under the hood. Focus on what actually matters.
And in sales, it is not just about closing deals. It is about showing up when things go wrong and standing behind what you promised.
Tyson Hempel
Exactly. The journey does not end at the sale.
Samuel Hill
Well said.
For Tyson Hempel, I am Samuel Hill, and that is all for now.
